The Town Of Bedford is a great place to live, work and play. It’s a quite area located just off route 460 around the midpoint of Lynchburg and Roanoke. So access to either city is very easy. The location is great for work or shopping at large retailers. However many of the local residents enjoy the Town of Bedford local retails stores for much of their needs. It is also a short drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Smith Mountain Lake.

 

History

In 1781 Bedford County was split into half to allow the creation of Campbell County. Needing a town central to the county, the Village of Liberty was founded in 1782 to be the county seat.  It remained a village unto 1839 when it was converted into a town. In the late 1880’s a devastating fire destroyed much of the town.  The citizens united to “revitalize” the area. Seeking a fresh start they changed the name to Bedford City. During this time new buildings and subdivisions were created along with in business and its own power company.

Bedford is best known as the Town with the highest death rate per capita during D-Day invasion of Normandy. That day 19 men from Bedford died along with another 3 who died a later in the Normandy campaign.

In 1968 the name was changed to the City of Bedford as the town became a city. This help further economic expansion and the City of Bedford because a place know for arts and cultural events. In 2013 Bedford converted back into a Town, officially becoming the Town Of Bedford. This has allowed the town to work closer with the county, reduce spending and grow the overall size of the town. But one of the biggest benefits has been for the school system.  Bedford is proud to be the home of the National D-Day Memorial. Thousands visit the area each year to see the monument.
