History

In 1781 Bedford County was split into half to allow the creation of Campbell County. Needing a town central to the county, the Village of Liberty was founded in 1782 to be the county seat.  It remained a village unto 1839 when it was converted into a town. In 1968 the name was changed to the City of Bedford as the town became a city. This help further economic expansion and the City of Bedford because a place know for arts and cultural events. In 2013 Bedford converted back into a Town, officially becoming the Town Of Bedford. This has allowed the town to work closer with the county, reduce spending and grow the overall size of the town. But one of the biggest benefits has been for the school system.  Bedford is proud to be the home of the National D-Day Memorial. Thousands visit the area each year to see the monument.
